We were asked to visit a property which turned out to have a very interesting design quirk.
When you want to add statement pieces and features to your property and you have a creative flair, all sorts of ideas pop up inside your, or your architect's, head. Whether they are to overcome shortcomings in the original property or, because of additional work, you need to modify other areas, proceed with caution - and think through all possible scenarios.
An odd piece of design choice, probably to let natural light in, occurred during improvements in this three bedroom Victorian house; the first floor internal corridor has had a glass floor installed. So what’s the problem?
Our eagle eyed and forward thinking Building Surveyor, Tom, based in South East London, realised this walkway is directly outside the shared bathroom and with no other means of access to bedrooms. Below this glass panel is the kitchen/dining room!
This means if someone has had a shower and walks down the landing with a towel on, anyone sitting below looking up may get a surprise whilst having their morning coffee.
As well as the structural observations around a property, a residential survey should also point out reasonable design faults which may impact the enjoyment or use of the property. Whilst there may be nothing technically wrong with the implementation, we point out our observations to help you make informed decisions and also point out elements, or considerations, you may miss in your excitement of finding your 'new' house.
